Countering drug violence in Mexico

A Christian Science perspective.

Violence has recently let loose in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Multiple murders have taken place, allegedly by organized crime. I live in a different region of Mexico, but my whole country is being shaken by waves of violence. Globalization, marginalization, migration, inequalities, unemployment aggravate the situation.

The drug cartels have diversified their activities into human trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, intimidation, and the sale of protection. This is affecting every country, and we should gather our efforts to recover peace.

On the other hand, the goodwill of individuals is reflected in organized civil activities like the march for peace and in multidenominational prayer crusades. Some churches have reported an increase in attendance. People are looking for refuge and comfort. This is a sign that more people are trying to get closer to God. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, wrote, ?My heavenly Father will never leave me comfortless, in the amplitude of His love; coming nearer in my need, more tenderly to save and bless? (?Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896,? p. 249).

We need divine help. And the help from our Creator is always present to give us strength, so His wisdom can be seen reflected in those who are in charge of law and order.

How can we pray? The Bible asks us to start with love: ?I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you? (Matt. 5:44). It also says, ?The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence? (II Sam. 22:3).

These ideas from the Bible point toward our heavenly home, where we can feel protected and safe. We can find this home as we allow love and forgiveness to reign in our hearts. The Bible also promises, ?There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus? (Rom. 8:1), which indicates that we have all been forgiven by our Father, God, and therefore, it is within us to forgive.

I have been able to prove the power of prayer. About three years ago, when violence had just started to ravage northern Mexico, my son and his family were living in Reynosa, in the state of Tamaulipas. A friend called to tell me that in that area there had been a shooting that had lasted several hours. The shooting had started in the street behind where my son was living and spread for several blocks. My daughter-in-law was home and her young son was at a day-care center nearby. There was no way to communicate with them. I started to pray as I?ve learned in Christian Science, knowing that God was caring for and protecting them, and therefore they were out of danger. This came to mind: ?[H]e shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways? (Ps. 91:11).

A little later I could reach my daughter-in-law and encourage her, so she was able to go out and get her son. The day-care center staff had kept the children safe under the stairs in the building. Nobody at the center was harmed.

The word of God is powerful. God?s omnipotence and omnipresence always operate in favor of all humanity.

2012 Cleantech Investing Forecast Cloudy | EarthTechling

by Susan DeFreitas, December 3rd, 2011

What?s the forecast for cleantech investing in 2012? Cloudy with a chance of decline, according a new set of predictions?from Kachan & Co., a cleantech analysis and consulting firm, though predictions for the coming year do?include some bright spots as well, particularly in the realms of wave power and industrial wastewater.

First, the bad news: the amount of venture capital entering clean technology companies?is expected to decline in 2012 for the first time since the global economic downturn?of 2008. After three successive years of growth, the market for cleantech investing is now likely to?flag due to increased difficulties in fundraising?for investors themselves, waning policy support in the developed world and negative sentiment from the past two quarters (including?the general fall-out from the high-profile bankruptcy of Solyndra).

However,?other factors are expected to help mitigate?this decline, including?China?s desire to?manage its economic turbulence, a forecasted rise in oil prices and global corporations??strengthened role in cleantech, as well as continued solar innovation and persistence of the fundamental drivers of cleantech.

Other bright spots for cleantech investing?in the coming year?include a rising interest in marine power, i.e., wave, tidal and ocean thermal energy. While??2012 will not be the year that marine power?becomes cost-competitive with coal, or even nearly, we can expect to see increased private and corporate funding.? (This prediction is based on increased numbers of marine power trials around the world, as well as?recent strategic investments by large companies like Siemens.)

We can also expect to see increased water and agricultural sector activity as industrial wastewater?drives water investments, based on a growing understanding of the potential for produced water from the oil and gas industry to?be put to work in growing crops.

Minister: Japan corp governance on par with US (AP)

TOKYO ? Economy Minister Yukio Edano defended Japan's corporate governance practices Friday amid an ongoing accounting scandal at Olympus Corp. that has tainted the country's image.

Looking at past cases related to corporate governance, Japan's efforts and record were at least on par with the U.S. or even better, Edano told reporters at a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan.

After initially denying any wrongdoing, camera and medical equipment maker Olympus acknowledged a $687 million payment for financial advice and expensive acquisitions to cover up investment losses dating to the 1990s.

The dubious transactions came to light after the company's then-CEO, Michael Woodford, raised questions about them ? and was promptly fired by the board.

The scandal has prompted criticism that Japan lags far behind other advanced economies in its corporate governance standards, or the rules and processes by which businesses are operated and controlled.

Edano called the Olympus case "unfortunate," and said efforts are needed to avoid recurrences.

But he strongly rejected criticism that Japan lacks proper standards in this regard.

"To say that Japan has no corporate governance is going too far, way to far," Edano said. "Historically, looking at past cases related to corporate governance, Japan is at least at the same level as the U.S. or even better, in term of effort and results."

The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan and other foreign business associations have said Japanese companies tend to appoint only board members with close ties to the company's management or majority shareholder, perpetuating the perception that Japanese corporations are dominated by insiders.

The Japanese government is currently revising its Company law.

To strengthen corporate governance, the ACCJ and business groups from EU, Canada and Australia and New Zealand have urged Tokyo to require companies to appoint a meaningful number of independent outside directors, and require an independent committee to handle board decisions where the risks of self-interest and conflicts are inherently high.

On Thursday, Woodford resigned as a director of Olympus, but vowed to work with shareholders to replace the company's board. The British national ? a rare foreigner to lead a Japanese company before he was fired on Oct. 14 ? was still a member of the board because dismissal from it can only be done by shareholders.

Olympus' shares have plunged since Woodford's dismissal. The company must submit proper financial reports by Dec. 14, or it risks being delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The Best Package Tracker for iPhone [Iphone App Directory]

The Best Package Tracker for iPhoneThere are plenty of package trackers to choose from on the iPhone, some of which are very good, but nothing really comes close to the ease of Slice. It wins our pick for best-in-class package tracker because you never have to enter you tracking numbers into the app. It pulls them from your email inbox automatically and lets you know when they're out for delivery.

The Best Package Tracker for iPhone

  • Connect Slice to a Google or Yahoo! email account for automatic purchase detection and shipment notifications
  • Get push notifications of package shipments and deliveries
  • Track how much money you're spending online
  • Easily access a backlog of electronic receipts and check return options
  • Check out information about anything you purchased, including product specifications

The Best Package Tracker for iPhone

Slice is a great package tracker because it doesn't require any actual effort on your part. All you have to do is connect it with your Yahoo! or Google mail account and it'll import all your receipts. If you order something new, Slice will grab it as well. It will then send you push notifications as packages make their way to you. Basically, you do absolutely nothing and you'll be provided with the information with you want. That's pretty fantastic. Additionally, Slice will offer up a searchable purchase history so you can see what you bought, when you bought it, how much it cost, what the item looks like, what its return policy is, specific information about the product, and more. Slice is an incredibly useful app for frequent online shoppers and a great solution to the ongoing problem of manually entering tracking numbers into your phone.

The Best Package Tracker for iPhone

If you simply want a package tracker, Slice may be too much. When I imported all my receipts from my Gmail account, it pulled in iTunes App Store purchases and even a pizza delivery. (You can, however, turn off iTunes and Netflix purchases in the preferences.) I don't mind this because I love the idea of having easy access to all my receipts. That said, if you're simply looking to track your packages this amount of information might be a little overwhelming. If it is, check out some of the simpler options in the competition section. If it isn't, you'll likely have no issues with the app.

Delivery Status ($3) is a bit pricier than the rest but the cost gets you an iPhone and iPad hybrid app. It's also one of my personal favorites, as I'd been using it for a few years and it never gave me any trouble. It lets you sync deliveries with its servers and to any iDevices. You can add shipments online through the Delivery Status web app or via a Mac OS X Dashboard widget. The iOS app detects when you have a tracking number stores in the clipboard, too, so you don't even have to bother pasting it. The app just sets up a new delivery automatically. While the ease of using Slice is hard to beat, Delivery Status comes about as close as you're going to get.

iDelivery ($1) has a very cool interface with a virtual representation of the packages you're tracking. It also provides a wealth of tracking information for more shipping services than you knew existed.

My Package (Free) is a standard free option. It doesn't do much more than let you enter your tracking number (manually) and track your package using a few popular services, but it does ofter a nice map view of where your package has traveled and gets the job done.
