Shell Oil wins another legal battle in offshore drilling quest in Alaska Arctic

As reported by the Anchorage Daily News, Friday night saw one more legal victory for Shell Oil in its quest to drill in Alaska?s Arctic waters.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday rejected efforts to stop the company from exploration drilling this summer in the Beaufort Sea. It also denied challenges to the company?s plans to drilling in the Chuckchi Sea.

The challenge to already-approved plans was filed by environmental groups and the Native Village of Point Hope and the Inupiat Community of the North Slope. It asserted that the federal government didn?t consider the risks to drilling in such a sensitive area, and that Shell?s oil spill response plan was lacking. It took particular issue with the company?s ?capping and containment system,? which has not been used in Arctic waters before.

The Government Accountability Office recently questioned whether Shell?s oil-spill response plan was adequate. A GAO report said that Shell?s capping and containment systems ?do not completely mitigate some of the environmental and logistical risks associated with the remoteness and environment of the region.?

None of the risks seem to worry most of Alaska?s politicians, however. On Friday, Sen. Mark Begich, a Democrat, was in Seattle touring Shell?s drilling ship, the conical-shaped Kulluk, which will soon be making its way to Alaska waters.

?It?s impressive to see this rig first-hand and know it will be hard at work in the Beaufort this summer,? Begich said in a release following his visit. ?The focus this season is on safety. I am confident Shell will do this right, and it?s clear they have tools to do just that.?

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates Arctic waters hold 26 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 130 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Possible blood test for bowel cancer

A team of Australian scientists has identified new genes that show identifiable changes in the blood of people with bowel cancer.

The discovery has the potential to underpin a new cost-effective blood test that would signal the early stages of bowel cancer. This test could potentially save thousands of lives by supplementing existing screening programs and encouraging those at risk to have a colonoscopy.

The research ? presented for the first time at a major medical conference in the United States ? is the result of over five years of scientific collaboration between Australian biotechnology company Clinical Genomics, CSIRO and the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer at Flinders University in Adelaide, lead by senior investigator Professor Graeme Young.

A new blood test for bowel cancer based on these discoveries is now under development and is currently being tested with patients from Australia, the United States and Europe. The Australian research team is hoping to attract interest from other clinicians and scientists around the world to help them further validate the new test.

Dr Lawrence LaPointe, CEO of Clinical Genomics, said they have shown a high detection rate for bowel cancer while also demonstrating a false positive rate of about 5% in samples drawn from a high-risk population.

?These clinical trial results are highly promising but we need to go one step at a time. The next step is to seek help from other groups and researchers to cast the net more broadly to see what we can achieve with a larger number of tests drawn from a sample of the general population,? Dr LaPointe said.

?There is still some time to go before a blood based test of this nature might be broadly available to a community but the technology is clearly worthy of broader, rigorous testing.

Importantly, a simple blood test like this could significantly improve patient participation with bowel cancer screening programs,? Dr LaPointe said.

Dr Peter Molloy, from CSIRO?s Preventative Health Flagship, said ?These exciting results are the product of a close alignment of clinical research with advanced genomics, epigenetics and biological statistics viewed through the lenses of clinical need and commercial focus?.

?One new gene identified was particularly sensitive to cancer. This gene is called ?colon adenocarcinoma hypermethylated? or CAHM. In 120 blood samples we observed a high positivity for cancers (68%) while still being accurate in 97 per cent of normal patients. We have also shown that a three gene test including CAHM was able to detect cancer 76% of the time with a 93% accuracy in normal patients? Dr Molloy said.

Senior investigator, Professor Graeme Young, from the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer at Flinders University in Adelaide, said the prevention of bowel cancer is a major public health priority in Australia and early detection is clearly the path to better outcomes in the future.

?One of the key questions is how a test like this might complement existing screening efforts in a cost-effective way to save even more lives in the future,? Professor Young said.

?The breakthrough data presented today is the result of exciting multidisciplinary research between industry, Australia?s national science agency and clinical researchers from one of the nation?s leading teaching hospitals.

?The need now is to collaborate more broadly with national and international researchers committed to translation of science innovation to clinical outcomes, to help validate these exciting findings in large scale prospective studies,? Professor Young said.

CANNES, France (AP) ? Michael Haneke won the Cannes Film Festival's top prize for a second time Sunday with his stark film about love and death, "Amour."

The Austrian director's powerful and understated film stars two French acting icons ? 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva and 81-year-old Jean-Louis Trintignant ? as an elderly couple coping with the wife's worsening health.

Haneke previously won the Palme in 2009 for "The White Ribbon," and is the seventh director to take the top prize twice.

The festival jury awarded the second-place Grand Prize to Matteo Garrone's Italian satire "Reality," while Ken Loach's whiskey-tasting comedy "The Angels' Share" won the third-place Jury Prize.

Carlos Reygadas was named best director for his surrealism-tinged story of a Mexican family, "Post Tenebras Lux."

The best actor prize went to Mads Mikkelsen as a man ostracized by his small-town community when he is accused of child abuse in "The Hunt."

Jury member Ewan McGregor said Mikkelsen had given a beautiful performance whose "wonder is in the subtlety ... but with complete conviction with his character."

Best actress was won jointly by Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan for Romanian movie "Beyond the Hills." Cristian Mungiu's drama of love and faith in a remote Romanian monastery also won the award for best screenplay.

The festival is wrapping up Sunday in the French Riviera resort.

The prize winners were chosen by a jury, led by Italian director Nanni Moretti, that included actors Ewan McGregor and Diane Kruger, director Alexander Payne and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Moretti revealed that none of the winners had been a unanimous choice.

The 12-day festival has seen plenty of glamour, with the likes of Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appearing both on-screen and on the red carpet.

But in the movies, weighty themes dominated at an event whose French Riviera froth was subdued by several days of unseasonable rain and cold.

Despite a strong American flavor to the festival, U.S. films were shut out apart from Benh Zeitli's "Beasts of the Southern Wild," which won the Camera d'Or for best first film.

The jury overlooked Pitt, who plays a cynical mob enforcer in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly," and Kidman as a Southern femme fatale in Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy."

Payne said it would be wrong to draw any conclusions about the state of a nation's cinema "based on one tiny snapshot."

Other much-praised performances at the festival included Marion Cotillard's tragedy-struck killer-whale trainer in "Rust and Bone," newcomer Paul Brannigan's scrappy Glasgow lad in "The Angels' Share," and Denis Lavant, as a performer who takes on a host of bizarre personas in "Holy Motors."

Square, PayPal, Intuit, Verifone -- the mobile payments field (and we're not talking wallets here) is seriously crowded already. So, the question is then, why on Earth would Groupon want to join the fray? We're not entirely sure, but VentureBeat is reporting the coupon service is preparing to do just that. According to a source within the company, Groupon is testing card-reading dongle and payment platform with surprisingly aggressive pricing. According to the insider, transaction fees will be 1.8 percent, on top of a $0.15 base charge. By comparison, square charges a flat 2.75 percent. Interestingly, the source also claims that Groupon is handing out, not just free readers, but free iPod touches to plug them into. The move makes obvious sense since the company snatched up Kima Labs, makers of TapBuy, in February. Besides, it could easily integrate its discount offers with the platform as a value added service. None of this is confirmed just yet but, we certainly wont be surprised if this rumor pans out.

Personally I recognize the process to be complete when I no longer remember ?what I was like before?. Someone still in denial about the need to change will not get very far. Chances are there will always be excuses in the form of: I do not have the time for this right now, I am busy, I already know how to?, it is not my fault, you do not understand, ?a leopard cannot change its spots?, I am too old?etc.

Change can only really happen if you are ready to take action.

Research shows 90% of the strategies designed for change assume people are ready to take action. In reality only 20% of the people already involved in some process of change are actually ready to take action. This helps explain why so many attempts to keep New Year?s resolutions, lose weight, change behaviours, etc, are doomed to failure.

It is most helpful and supportive and will increase your chances of successfully completing a change if you can engage the help of a friend or life coach. They will help you by being totally honest, motivate, encourage and in general offer the kind of support you will benefit from. Specifically how to offer this support varies from individual to individual so make sure you communicate clearly how you need them to be.
